ABOUT THE PROPERTY
Architect William (Billy) Griffin built this custom mid-century Modernist home for his own family in 1956. Located on a double private lot of 2.11 acres, he situated the home around a lovely pond. The common rooms are in the center of the house and they have walls of windows overlooking the pond and backyard. The kitchen and family room with fireplace are open concept which was unique in the 1950s and is a highly prized design now. The master bedroom suite with private bath is on one end of the home where it overlooks the pond. On the other side are four additional bedrooms that share two full baths. The two bedrooms on the back of the house have windows that overlook the pond. There are plenty of storage cabinets and closets throughout the home, and the spacious laundry room features a wall of built-in shelving. The floors throughout the home are luxury vinyl plank flooring, vinyl or tile.

Original architectural and design features are still in place. These include original bathroom tile and fixtures, hall & bedroom vents which contribute to the flow of air, acoustic tile ceilings in the common areas which dampen sound, rows of clerestory windows, and a brick fireplace wall with wood fireplace that appears to have never been used.

ABOUT THE ARCHITECT
WILLIAM BARWICK (BILLY) GRIFFIN (1917-2007)

NCModernistNCModernist

Billy Griffin was born in Goldsboro and stayed there all his life. The son of A. T. Griffin who owned a lumber manufacturing plant, Billy learned the skills of a hands-on carpenter and tree farmer as a boy during the depression. He graduated from NCSU with a BS in 1942. In WWII he served as a Naval Photographic Intelligence Officer in the Pacific. He was one of the first people to see the results of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. After the war, he worked at his father’s lumber mill and studied briefly under Dean Henry Kamphoefner at the NCSU School of Design. He opened an architectural office in Goldsboro in 1949. Although he designed many houses, including the Lincoln and Fairview homes area of Goldsboro, his primary focus was in public schools. He was Mayor Pro Tem of Goldsboro. Griffin was a strong proponent of passive solar and incorporated it in all of his projects. He enjoyed flying and was a private pilot. After retirement, he spent time sailing and working on his tree farm.
